Dropped Object Survey

Objects falling from height remain one of the most common causes of offshore accidents, despite the considerable effort the oil and gas industry has made to reduce the risks. Dropped Object Prevention Scheme (DROPS) surveys and inspections are a vital element of any dropped object control and prevention management system. AIMMS can help to prevent a potential dropped object, becoming another unwelcome safety statistic by conducting a detailed dropped object survey of hazardous areas. We undertake a comprehensive sweep of each area to compile a detailed hazards inventory list, supplemented by photographs.

AIMMS uses its in-house developed packages and apps for conducting dropped object inspections. We implement programs in accordance with regulatory and customer requirements, DROPS society guidelines and AIMM’s Falling Objects and Securing of Equipment procedure. The latter contains the following requirements for establishing and maintaining measures that prevent incidents:

  • Securing loose equipment
  • An inspection program for safety devices for loose equipment
  • Follow-up procedures after equipment aloft has been subjected to abnormal loads
  • Operational safety measures for areas exposed to falling objects
  • Physical barriers against falling objects.
